ABALONE ALLOCATIONS STAY – FOR NOW

South Africa - The Abalone Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and the zonal allocations for the 2014/15 fishing season will remain unchanged.

This decision follows an October announcement of proposed quota cuts which ruled out nearshore fishing in the Overberg’s A,B,C and D zones of Arniston, Gansbaai, Hawston/Hermanus and Kleinmond. Existing abalone right holders were furious and claimed that the biggest problem was poaching and that nothing was being done about it.

According to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) the zonal allocations are as follows:

•           Zone A: 25-tons

•           Zone B: 25-tons

•           Zone C: 0-tons

•           Zone D: 0-tons

•           Zone E: 12-tons

•           Zone F: 16-tons

•           Zone G: 18-tons

Earlier this year the allocation of long term rights for the abalone sector were extended by one year to July 2015.
