CONSERVATION PLAN FOR WEST COAST ROCK LOBSTER FISHERY
South Africa - West Coast Rock Lobster is now listed as RED on WWF’s Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (WWF-SASSI) list.
The fishery which provides direct employment to some 4000 people has for several years faced annual cuts in quota and stock levels have been measured to be only 2,5% of their historical size largely due to overfishing and illegal harvesting.
A Fisheries Conservation Project is being implemented for the West Coast Rock Lobster fishery with a view to moving the fishery back to sustainable stock levels. This is a four year plan designed to address the challenges in the fishery.
