UPDATE ON FISHING RIGHTS ALLOCATION PROCESS (FRAP2015/16)
South Africa - Abalone and west coast rock lobster (nearshore and offshore) fishing companies and individuals that hold long term rights to fish commercially, have received exemptions for the 2016/2017 fishing season.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has given as a reason that it needs more time to assess and evaluate the substantial number of applications received for the right to undertake fishing in these sectors. It is also appointing a forensic company to check the accuracy of information provided and has undertaken to conduct a random lifestyle audit on staff.
DAFF says although fishing can continue, it still reserves the right to introduce effort limitation which may affect the duration of the fishing season, adjust the TAC in either sector or withdraw the exemption at any stage should there be justifiable reason to do so
DAFF is currently busy with the Patagonian Toothfish, Horse Mackerel, Large Pelagic and Hake Inshore Trawl sectors. Announcements in relation to these four sectors will be released during the first week of November 2016. It further intends to make announcements in relation to the Seaweed, KZN Sardine Beach-Seine and Fish Processing Establishments and hopes to conclude the allocation process by December 2016.
