SMALL SCALE FISHERS TO PROTEST AGAIN
Small scale fishers from numerous Western Cape fishing communities will again show their dissatisfaction when they gather at Parliament tomorrow, Friday, 25 November, from noon. They will be delivering a memorandum of their grievances to the Portfolio Committee of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries which is having a meeting to hear the issues about implementing the Small-scale Fishing Policy.
The fishers have been very unhappy with the allocations made to them to date in the linefish, netfish, mussels and west coast rock lobster sectors which they say are unfair compared to allocations made to the commercial sector. They are also still waiting for details of what they will receive as part of their basket of species and small-scale fishers are now demanding that this sector be prioritised and that no further allocations are made until they are corrected and considered to be adequate.
